French Drain Solutions: Managing Shellharbour Runoff Effectively

Addressing Water Ingress Issues in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour faced a significant and escalating issue with water ingress. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and infiltrate beneath the house’s foundation. This water intrusion caused extensive damage to the flooring, encouraged rising damp, and resulted in mould growth, putting the recent renovations at serious risk.

How Can You Determine the Cause of Water Intrusion?

The problem stemmed from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of the adjacent properties. Without an effective drainage solution to intercept this influx, the water was forced to travel beneath the house.

Implementing a Reliable Drainage System

CS Plumbing engineered and installed a gravity-fed French drain system designed to capture and redirect water before it could reach the home’s foundation.

The project included several essential components:

  • A French drain system specifically designed to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes for optimal water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller versions, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the property boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to create a sturdy barrier against the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient on-site soil removal executed using a dumper for streamlined site management.

What Are the Benefits of Effective Water Management?

The newly implemented drainage system now successfully captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. The homeowner has secured a robust, low-maintenance solution that protects their foundation, flooring, and investment in renovations.
